Richard Avedon: Immortal: Portraits of Aging, 1951–2004 at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts

This exhibition, whose title translates to Immortal: Portraits of Aging, 1951–2004, includes nearly one hundred photographs by Richard Avedon of both unknown and public figures, including Truman Capote, Duke Ellington, Toni Morrison, Patti Smith, and many more. For nearly half a century Avedon sought to represent the advancement of age in the faces of those he photographed. These portraits—visual “sermons on bravado,” as he sometimes called them—dramatize the universal experience of aging and unflinchingly testify to the determination with which people confront the relentless passage of time.
