HAMILTONS GALLERY proudly presents an exhibition of ten new photographs by contemporary British artist, Richard Caldicott.

In a series that includes over 200 images, Caldicott uses the medium of colour photography to transform still lives of utilitarian objects into elegant, luminous works of art. His principal material is used Tupperware boxes and lids. By enlarging or layering one piece over another, he transforms the original objects into mysterious, colour-saturated forms which,

“whether photographed straight or manipulated into an arrangement of ghostly overlays, the kitchen containers become Caldicott’s medium, and he makes the most of its seductive soft geometry and luscious range of colours… these are paintings with plastic, and the results are appropriately high gloss and pretty irresistible”
Vince Aletti, The Village Voice

Reminiscent of such Colour Field painters as Barnett Newman and Mark Rothko, Caldicott’s 50 x 40 inch Ilfochrome prints of these ordinary plastic storage containers assume a seductive, meditative aura which is more about colour and light than the pieces themselves. The viewer is encouraged to look beyond the functionality and purely representational surface of the work and behold these photographs as a celebration of the unexpected beauty of mundane household objects.

Richard Caldicott was born in 1962 and currently lives and works in London. Since graduating form the Royal College of Art, London (1987) he has exhibited on an international level including solo shows at Ariel Meyerowitz Gallery, New York (2002), Hamiltons Gallery, London (2000), Camera Work Gallery, Berlin (2000), Finesilver Gallery, San Antonio, Texas (2000), Dorothee de Pauw Gallery, Brussels (1998), Kunstmuseum Bonn (1997). His work is represented in many significant collections, including the Kunstmuseum Bonn, ‘Karl Blossfeldt-Albert Renger Patzch-Archiv’ Ann and Jurgen Wilde, Koln, Sir Elton John Collection, Merrill Lynch International Bank and BP Amoco.
