Hamiltons is pleased to announce an exhibition of new paintings by Elliott Puckette.

Opening Wednesday 26th November and continuing through January 17th, 2004.

Born in Lexington, Kentucky in 1967, Elliott Puckett lives and works in New York. Her works are in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art in New York, The New York Public Library and the Fogg Art Museum in Boston.

Her paintings are grand, fluent and confident in their language. They are reminiscent of handwriting or calligraphy, something we are tempted to try and read. Indeed Puckette’s lines, like text, guide the eye in purposeful directions across watery surfaces of brilliant blues, fields of scarlet, and dark plum.   The paintings may broach meaning, or hover near the border of an imagined legibility, but they also refute it. They are without compromise, and do not lend themselves to explanation or interpretation. These pictures appear to be spontaneous despite the fact that the lines are etched over weeks of work, into their backgrounds scratch by scratch, with a razor blade. They follow the course of their own making: ambiguous but never random.
